• Grocery shopping is a drag. For me the experience of shopping at a store feels unnatural. I'm in my element at a farmers market and shop with great ease, but put me indoors with florescent lights and lots of packaging and my mind goes blank. One small bright note for me in going to the store is discovering someone's shopping list in the bottom of the cart. I play a game where I try to figure out who the author of the note might be and what occasion it is they're shopping for. For instance, a bachelor doing his daily shopping or someone shopping for a party. I love combing the clues.

    Shopping list
    found list

I had an epiphany the other day when I found a list in my cart (shown above). When I'm stumped for what to buy I could just use a found list. Mind you the list would have to be acceptable, but in the case of the one shown above I think it's a pretty good find. Are they going to cook the fish with the shallots? Will they be making a bean salad that includes the cilantro? Will there be an appetizer platter with the carrots, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, cheese and crackers? Hmmm. What are the cabbage and chard for? Maybe they'll sautee some of the veggies to have with the fish. Anyway, I think it's a pretty good list to fill in my shopper's block (like writer's block).

Then I had another idea. I was drifting up and down the aisles aimlessly the other day when I noticed this one guy had a fetching selection in his cart. He kept popping up on the same aisle as me, each time with a few more appealing items added to his cart. Wow, I could just shadow him. I'll follow him around the store and buy whatever he's buying. Heh!

    Andy, Dalai Lama and Hamish

Well, I was watching The Graham Norton Show the other night with guests Hamish and Andy, and what do you know, they do a thing on the streets called "ghosting". I myself don't see the point (in truth, I love these guys). I think my version is much more productive. What do these guys get out of it? A few chuckles. With my version you get at least one meal out of it. Maybe several, depending on who you choose to shadow at the market. Important tip: try to choose someone who appears to be in the same class as you. I'm talking money. You don't want to follow someone around who is wearing $200 jeans if you're a thrift store dresser. You'll end up with a hefty tab at the check-out. So yes, I'm giving you permission to profile people. Make assumptions about them based on their clothes, accessories and haircut. If you feel like stepping out of your grocery comfort zone choose a college student. Preferably an art student, if you really want to experiment. I'll be reporting back on my results. Cheers and happy new shopping!

  • Now that it's summer and flowers abound I'm happy to get reacquainted with old faces. I mean old vases. Pulling them off of the high shelves and back corners of my cupboards. Liberating them to help show off the bounty of the season. Yippee! I was browsing over on Etsy and found some really delightful offerings. I'll always have a soft spot for the vintage ones:

I could go on and on sharing everything from ceramicist Whitney Smith. I adore her work. I was pleased to discover that she studied art in Santa Cruz at Cabrillo College, just down the street from me…

We recently visited a local buddhist retreat on a special day — they were giving dog blessings. It was so sweet to see them lined up and passing between two foo dog sentries to enter the meditation hall where they would receive their blessing. Our family was blessed as well. I like how that sounds: we were blessed as “well“.

    Bless Marcel…

A shout out to the Boston Celtics today! Bear with me if you're not a fan. Bonne chance and luck o' the Irish in game six of the NBA Championship tonight guys. Boston leads the L.A. Lakers 3-2 in this best of seven series.

I'm from San Francisco and count myself as a Golden State Warriors fan. But my parents are from Portland, Maine and so I have a legacy of rooting for Boston.

    I love these guys…

World Cup note: How 'bout Brazil! Couple of smooth goals today. Yeah. I was happy that in the final minute North Korea got to score at least one goal. Do you know that their fans are hand-picked by the government? They are in fact actors from China. There's one for your Orwellian score book.

I've finally finished one out of hundreds of projects I have going. I usually complete one phase of a project — in this case that meant buying and cutting the plywood — then it sits while I move on to do another phase of another project (they don't call me Gemini for nothin'). I had started stenciling a wall in my living room with one of my original stencil designs, then I decided that the stencil would look nice on the plywood coffee table that I was making. You can purchase the legs at Ikea. This is the result.

It was my birthday on June 2nd and I've been eating cake ever since. We had a comfy family birthday dinner at home on the 2nd. Unless I'm going to be sitting at a long table under a grape arbor in Tuscany, settled in for an eight course meal, I don't really care to go out to eat these days. I prefer a nice slow meal at home. I made a spinach mushroom lasagne with béchamel sauce and gruyère cheese. Mmmm. Then we had a chocolate madness cake with ganache. Mmmm.

On the 3rd of June my sweet neighbor Doug and his yellow labrador Cody surprised me with a triple layer chilled cake that had two layers of chocolate cake with a mint custard in the middle and ganache on top. Mmmmm.

Then last night my friend and fellow collecting hound David came over with a mile high totally gourmet carrot cake, with an incredible cream cheese frosting. My dinner menu:

pilaf with raisins, cumin seed, and almonds

salad of fennel bulbs, bartlett pears, basque sheep's cheese, and nasturtiums

wild salmon fillets with a dill, lemon, olive oil marinade, cooked quickly in the oven in an iron skillet

shallots, crimini mushrooms, orange cauliflower and broccoli sauteed in olive oil

    garlic naan

    David lifestyle_lunch

We also had an exquisite Australian wine that David brought. Luckily I saw him coming up the path as his hands were too full, what with the cake and wine, to ring the bell.

I saw a fabulous show on the Cooking Channel today — David Rocco's Dolce Vita.

David lives in Florence and his friend Eddy visited from Amalfi arriving at the flat loaded down with instruments, packages, and octopus from Napoli! He had to kick the door open because his hands were so full. Rocco says there's an Italian expression "bussare con i piedi" (something like that). It means you have to "knock with your feet" at the door because  you're bearing so many gifts. It's a good thing.

I'm so happy the summer is upon us and that I'm taking time to be with friends. Which leads me to my latest declaration. I hereby declare myself a Slow Blogger. I'd been having some guilt over the fact that I have dry spells where I don't post for weeks at a time. There are so many great blogs out there where people blog every day, even several times a day. I want to read them all, but I can't keep up. Slow down you amazing bloggers! You're making me look bad! I came to the conclusion that like my interior design style, and my cooking style, I am also a Slow Blogger. There. I've given myself permission and a context. I'm so relieved! See you soon?

  • You may have already had the confounding experience of seeing Gerard Butler's New York City loft in the latest issue of Architectural Digest. You may have even been having interior design nightmares ever since. Well maybe I can help ease the trauma. I prescribe an exercise that may exorcise all those dark images from your psyche. You be the designer. I challenge you to re-do Gerard's loft as per his wishes, "I wanted something elegant and gorgeous and at the same time rather masculine and raw." Pobre Gerard. Instead what he got — after four years in the making mind you — was a dark Dickensian cavern of a home.

The artwork I would change periodically, as I do in my own home. There's just too much great art to have fixed pieces. besides, he can afford it. I myself of course simply rotate my thrift art.

I am now going to get the ball rolling by challenging a couple of bloggers to come up with a design for Mr. Butler's place:

I have a compulsion to re-design ( I'm sure I've been captured by surveillance in various dental and doctors' waiting rooms rearranging the furniture) and the moment I saw Gerard's place I began having visions. But I give credit to Hobac over at The House of Beauty and Culture for the idea to post this particular re-design.

Make sure you look at this other post from Hobac: From Heartbreaker to Heartbreak (it has some great comments), as well as Memo to Gerard Butler from An Aesthete's Lament.

P.S. I just found out that the designer of the loft, Elvis Restaino, is a set designer. No wonder I kept having the impression that it looked like a place where Indiana Jones would live.

I welcome anyone else who is interested to post their entry. Make sure to let me know, merci.

  • No interior designer should be without this book:

    Book

We have so many books in our home that I've rewritten the story of the Three Little Pigs: the first pig built his house out of straw, the second pig used wood, the third pig chose bricks, but the forth little pig was a clever little pig, "I defy you to blow down my house of books!"

Books Do Furnish A Room, by Leslie Geddes-Brown, shows traditional and inventive ways to store and display books. It gives you permission to revel in your piles on the floor, wallow in your stacks on every horizontal surface, and fortify your walls to the rafters with literary lust.
