• The best thing about a birthday is cake for breakfast the next day!

    June.2nd

I spent the day with the guys digging a hole. In order for our vegetable patch to be plantable we first have to make it gopher proof, which means digging the whole thing down about twenty four inches and creating a giant chicken wire barrier.

    Aptos 128

Marcel worked hard. Here he is resting by the hole while Papi digs. He picked out organic starter plants at the farmers market — tomatoes, basil, and rosemary. Bella Italia!

    Aptos 122

I was sidetracked, daydreaming beyond the hole at my clothesline. I just love whites billowing in the sun:

    Aptos 138

Then, beyond the clothesline I spied some Nasturtiums (love the leaves) and Agapanthus blossoms:

    Aptos 149

    Aptos 171

Well then I saw some pretty golden fungus on a heathered fence, and playful purple butterfly bush blooms, and I never did get back to that hole…

One of the many things I was reminded of on my move from Los Gatos to Aptos. Record albums are heavy! And so are 75 boxes of books, 30 lamps, endless collections of vintage pottery, priceless vintage paintings numbering close to one hundred, and a 40 pound buddha. "He ain't heavy. He's my buddha."

    P5160057

I am getting better though. I ignored at least half a dozen estate and yard sales on my way to the farmers market this morning. Happily the farmers market is just down the road, and more affordable than the toney, overpriced market in Los Gatos (aka. Beverly Hills).

Marcel paid a visit to the adoptable kitties there…

    P5160050

Our Nella made the move just fine, after a few scares where we couldn't find her. She's good at hiding…

    P5160066

My Jesse came for a visit from just next door in Santa Cruz. But it's a big deal as we don't get to see him that often. See what I mean…

    Aptos 033

We had lunch in the garden. That's the clothesline in the back left corner of the yard. It's so nice back there. A quiet little room…

    Aptos 035

One of the main reasons we rented this place was so that Marcel could indulge in his gardening passion. He made a bouquet the other day…

    Aptos 050

I got a beautiful Mothers Day bouquet from Jesse with deep dark Sweet Williams in it. Note the stencil by Scott Waterman on the fridge. I will use it soon Scott, I promise…

    Richie relaxing for a moment…

    Aptos 067

I have to say, I'm feeling more depleted than relaxed. Kind of like this…

    Aptos 059

I got the stereo hooked up today. A house ain't really a home without Otis…

    P5160053

Okay. Now I'm procrastinating. So much to put away and organize…

    Aptos 058

It's a happy move though. And my blogger buddies are welcome anytime!

  • Indulge me while I purge these celebrity comings and goings from my psyche. It's been a whirlwind lately. My Marcel had the honor of being the mascot, Little Globie, for the Harlem Globetrotters at the San Jose Arena which he reveled in. He got to go in and out of the dressing room with all of the big guys. And some of them are really big guys! Following that he was a special guest of Corbin Bleu's at the Oakland Arena. He looks up to Corbin (note the first name basis) and got to ask him all sorts of lingering questions, such as what kind of music he likes. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he likes all kinds of music — jazz, reggae, blues, opera. He said he draws the line at country though. Here are some cute shots of Marcel (without his enormous fuzzy globe head on) with Curly from the Globetrotters and Corbin Bleu:

    Marcel with Curly

    DSC_0012

Marcel was so upset with me because I cut his hair before Corbin's show, "I had a really cool 70s hair style!" In fact this photo is the antithesis of one I took of them a week earlier when my batteries went dead in the camera. They were both dressed in black and Corbin had a five-o'clock shadow. This is the angelic version, just by chance.

Also recently, my stepson from Maui came for a visit which is always a gift as we don't get to see him very often. He's a surf instructor/paprazzi. What a combo! He called us the other day while sitting on the beach next to Will Smith whose kids he was giving surfing lessons to. The funny thing about his vacation photos while visiting with us is that you can really tell that they are taken by a paparazzi photographer. It's hysterical! He would lay-in-wait for us, as in the photos below, and voila, celebrity family coming out of In-n-Out Burger. Ha! I laughed so hard when I saw these photos. My Britney Spears moment. Ha!

Next in this cavalcade of stars… now follow me on this one: my cousin's daughter-in-law, turned ex-daughter-in-law, Megan Joy Corkrey (Corkrey is my Mom's family) was a contestant on American Idol. I wish I could have given her advice on her wardrobe and song choices. I could've made her a star!

    Megan-joy-corkrey (1)

I never thought in a million years that I would have a reason to watch American Idol, but having a "family" member on got me started, then seeing and hearing Adam Lambert, among others, got me hooked! Megan has since been voted off but now I'm passionately rooting for Adam! If you know me, even just a bit, you know how unusual it is for me to watch something like this. I'm a Masterpiece Theater snob!

Now here's where it gets really interesting. I should've posted this last week as I had planned to, then you would have really gotten the full impact of the psychic powers I'm about to describe. Richard has always been astounded by my uncanny gift for saying
things while watching TV only to have the film character, sports
announcer, etc., repeat the exact thing that I had just said. I'm
talking about obscure things. For instance, while watching the weather: "I
wonder what the humidity level was last Wednesday." And low and behold
by some freakish twist the weather man will suddenly for no reason
what-so-ever start talking about last Wednesday's humidity.

About a week and half ago I saw the Will Smith/Rasario Dawson film Seven Pounds. Loved it. Have gone around everyday since then singing a song from the film, Feeling Good performed by Muse, driving everyone crazy. And I said to my Richard, "I wish that I could somehow get ahold of Adam Lambert and tell him to sing this song. This song is meant for him. Simon would love it if he sang this song."

    Adam Lambert

    Adam-lambert

Now hear this. Last night on American Idol Adam Lambert sang Feeling Good! I can't tell you how loud I screamed. I could hardly contain myself. That has surpassed any other psychic TV moment I have ever had! "What???!!!!! He sang the song I wanted him to sing????!!!!" And sing it he did!! He's such a pure entertainer. I don't care if you don't like his style, you have to love his talent and his spirit. He is made for the stage. Kris Allen, Allison Iraheta and Danny Gokey will all get careers out of this, but Adam should win. He's such a natural.

I found a video of the film version of the song performed by Muse, and in the process a great blog. Many thanks to Monte of ReelSoundtrack for posting it, along with an exhaustive list of the other songs from the film and their relation to the specific scenes. You're a gem Monte. Check out Seven Pounds for an engaging story and knockout performances by Smith and Dawson and the support cast, powerful screenplay by a first-time feature writer Grant Nieporte, brilliant direction from Italian director Gabriele Muccino (Pursuit of Happyness) and more. And don't forget to vote for Adam!

  • How is this possible. I sold a ton at Alameda at the beginning of the month. I sold a ton in Santa Cruz last weekend, yet my van is still packed full. I can't seem to shrink my load no matter how I try. I told a friend, It's like the blob that keeps growing while I sleep. Sheesh. I got to peek at a couple of booths next to me:

This woman was browsing through my design books when she discovered the photography book I was selling — with a photo of her when she was five years old. She has never owned a copy of the book herself so I was more than happy to give it to her. That's her, second from the right with the white headband:

  • Here's an easy-peasy idea for making a small pillow. As you may know I love re-purposing cloth items — shower curtains for wall art, bedspreads for tablecloths, etc. This project involves making a pillow out of a placemat. This only works with a double-sided placemat. The one I used is $5 right now at Pier1 Imports.

    P4100001

    P4100002

One end of this placemat is topstiched. Use a seamripper to take out those stitches, thereby opening one end to insert the pillow. I used an 12" x 20" feather pillow insert from Hancock Fabrics.

    P4100006

    P4100007

It is possible to flatten the pillow down enough to topstitch the end closed by machine. You can also hand stitch it. Ça y est, c'est fait! You have a sweet little two-sided pillow!

  • I finally did Alameda's Antiques by the Bay. Much gratitude to sfgirlbybay, Victoria, for her kindness in posting a heads-up about it. I got to meet so many of her sweet readers. I loved the crowd and wish I could've spent the entire day just photographing the people and treasures. What an eyeful. I was too busy minding the booth. Merci to my Richard for taking these shots:

Although I was so grateful to be back in my element amongst the colorful flea market crowd (I sold at the Skyview flea in Santa Cruz for some time), I have to admit that I'm feeling my age and can't imagine doing this on a regular basis. There's a small antique fair in Santa Cruz where the day starts later and will be more my speed. Look for me there in May. I'll give an update as it gets closer. Thanks again to Victoria and to all of you who visited space U19!
  • Lounge lizard

We were expecting company and I'd been selling so much of our furniture that suddenly I realized there wasn't enough seating. So I went to one of my favorite "stores", Craig's List, where I found this mid century Eames knock-off beauty for $100. I love that it's upholstered in this creamy cotton. The guy selling it was incredibly sweet. He had a large glass display case full of amazing Japanese toys he had collected and when my Marcel noticed a miniature of the lounge chair on a shelf he gave it to him. Thank you Joe!!

  • I was absolutely thrilled and perfectly giddy to discover this sweet shop and design studio on the first day of Spring. Most appropriate, as the space is blooming with colorful treats. Storefront & Studio is a joint effort by two talented and creative women, Anne Richardson and Kathleen Shaeffer.

     Storefront (23)

A special note: If you're a home-related designer living in the Santa Cruz area, Anne has mentioned that they have studio space for rent if you're interested in working in an inspiring environment. And If you live in the Bay Area it's worth a trip to this lovely place. You could make a sweet day of it by visiting Storefront & Studio in the morning and then going across the street to the newest New Leaf Community Market location and getting a picnic lunch to take down the street to Natural Bridges State Beach.

Merci Marcel for your patience while I took these photos. I know you couldn't wait to get to your chocolate croissant!
