Nina van de Goor, from the Netherlands has such a whimsical style. I recently discovered her on Flickr, and the things she does with patchwork make it look like a contemporary art form:

She has a great eye for collecting vintage ceramics. A passion!

Check out her Flickr photos and see what she did with her sister, Sanne’s house. Her web site seems to be down at the moment. Now I’m really intrigued. What could be in that mysterious site?!

UPDATE: Nina’s blog is working. It may take a couple of minutes for it to load.

Straight outta Brooklyn — Grace Bonney of Design Sponge hosted a Biz Lady Meet Up at Design Within Reach in San Francisco on Tuesday night (Oct.23rd).

It was stimulating, inspiring, informative, and yummy (so many talented bakers!). Grace has proven to be a powerful impresario and motivator, with over two hundred women drawn to the event; one of many on her tour of major U.S. cities. Grace arranged for professional women from the community to speak on topics like small business loans, marketing, and Grace's specialty, PR.

Meg Mateo Ilasco, who authored the book Craft Inc., Turn Your Creative Hobby Into A Business, among others, was one of the guest speakers:

Cate Kellison, from Rose & Radish (she said when she chose the name she thought it sounded professional, "like a law firm"), and Emily Gasner, from Working Solutions were the other speakers for the evening:

I was grateful to meet so many talented and supportive women, like Victoria from sfgirlbybay:

She encouraged me to put a new button on my blog to link my shop (see upper right of sidebar). Thanks for the great tip Victoria! I know it seems like an obvious connection to make, but I always thought that my blog was too personal (ie. unprofessional) to cross paths with my business. But Victoria got me to rethink all that.

I really value this blog/design community, now more than ever. Thank you so much Grace for taking the time and effort to create this wonderful event. You're a peach!

    Goodnight

  • I want to say a very big thanks to Victoria at sfgirlbybay for giving me so much exposure on her blog. It’s really quite generous of you Victoria. You’re incredibly kind.

I have been welcoming autumn. Absolutely revelling in it. I had planned to get myself into an autumn palette mode around the shop and house, donning all with fabrics and paints in warm, earthy tones. But the first grey day that came made me go into the season kicking and screaming. I went to my supply of paints in the garage and suddenly I was standing there with turquoise, lime, and white! "Stand back! I’m not ready to put sweaters on all of you!" So, despite my visions of rust, camel, cocoa, and the like, the furniture is coming out as if dressed in day-glo bikinis…

I will try (not) to get into the spirit, to play by the rules (not). Who says. I could’ve titled this post The Anarchist Designer. Lime and turquoise look even better on a grey day. I DO like green eggs and ham.

  • We went to a reading by children's author Mo Willems in Santa Cruz the other day.

    P9220028

He read from his recent release Knuffle Bunny Too, which I was surprised to learn is pronounced with a hard "K"! It sounded so soft and huggy with a soft "k" (like "knife"!) There is by the  way a small reference to this in the book. His voice is deep and he spoke strongly into the mike. Not one kid dared make a peep.

    P9220035

He is also, like his books, lighthearted and adult friendly. Marcel asked him if he had a dog. "Yes", he said, "I have a dog named Nelson, and when he was a puppy he was Half-Nelson." If you haven't discovered his work yet I encourage you to, by hook or by crook. Some of his books are Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog, Knuffle Bunny, and There's A Bird On My Head. They're great easy-reading books for beginning readers. Marcel read The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog to a toddler girl in the crowd while we were waiting for Mo to arrive.

For extra fun, check out Mo's blog, and remember, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!

  • If we’re all going to hell in a handbag, then I wanna go in a handcrafted handbag created by a lovely Argentian woman named Veronica! She is the sweet blogess over at Petunia who just celebrated her blog anniversary by having a contest where the prize was this beautiful bag that she made:

    Verobag1

She had her little dollie girl Fiona draw numbers from a basket to determine the winner. Here she is drawing my number:

    Fifi

Good job Fiona! And muchisimas gracias Veronica! I will use it to carry my sketch book in.

She designed it to be reversible:

I moved in my photo so I’ll take another one later (you wouldn’t know it by the way I keep house but, I’m a perfectionist). Happy Anniversary Vero!!

  • Managing time has never been my strong point. I resist prioritizing like the plague. I admit, I trick myself into thinking that I’m organized by keeping dozens of running lists, on all sorts of pads and scraps of paper. I start with a solvable list of maybe six to-do items, I accomplish four then transfer the other two unfinished items to a new list where I’ve added several more new items. So the lists mutate and multiply, but never disappear! Aaaaaa! I do make sure that the shop is always looking lovely, but with all of the buying, selling, bookwork, decorating, refinishing, etc. I don’t have a minute to spare for the homefront. You remember my living room that won the contest for Better Homes and Gardens magazine? Here’s a reminder photo. This is what it looked like in January:

And here’s what it looked like in May:

How would you like to sit and have a relaxing spot of tea with me in my designer dining room:

And lastly, my bedside (why are my dreams so busy?):

That’s Marcel’s extra bed on the right that he sleeps in from time to time. There’s a googly eyed Mother’s Day card on the nightstand. I know… I’ll insert a close-up here for levity:

So you would think that I’d get tired of living this way, that I’d put my foot down and cry out, "This can’t go on!" But you’d be wrong my friend. Here are a few updated photos that I took a mere fifteen minutes ago, starting with the award winning living room:

    Amess

I’d love to have you over for a yummy pesto dinner, but I’m afraid we’ll be eating al fresco as this is the state of my dining room:

And let’s check in on the entry hallway and guest room:

    And my bedside (slightly better!):

Maybe I should just move out! One benefit is, now that I’ve come clean so to speak, I will be challenged to make amends and show you the "after" photos. The good news is that through all of this Marcel is happy and thriving. We spent the day at the beach yesterday. Now that’s good prioritizing!

  • We had a sweet time with "uncle" Chris the other night. For over 15 years now, when he's in town, I get a call to come to the show. My dear friend Gillian, who works with Chris, hasn't given up on me, even though I've had to decline the offer of passes for the past 7 years. I was newly pregnant with Marcel at the last show I went to. I thought now was the perfect time as Marcel would be old enough to remember it, and I'm pretty certain he will. He danced on the side, near the bass player, all night long like I've never seen him dance before, twisting and gyrating, ha!

Here he is at the beginning, with earplugs still inserted:

You would never know that I used to be a tour photographer by these shots. I had my camera on the wrong setting. Was it because I was giddy at having a night out, or cast in a dizzy spell by the music:

We had a lovely time with the percussionist Rafael and his enchanting family, playing at the neighborhood park and riding on the little wooden park train. I haven't been able to tear myself away from work at the shop and I realize how essential it is, and how important it is to be in touch, person to person. Forgive me for the lousy exposure on the camera Rafael:

  • We took my Marcel to see Ratatouille the other night. He was so inspired that at ten o’clock that night he wanted to start making soup! I told him that we needed to get a full night’s sleep to make really good soup. So the next day I took him to the market and let him pick out the ingredients he wanted. He was determined to make a red soup(his favorite color), so we picked out the veggies accordingly. By the way, what a great way to decide what to make, by choosing a color. We had such fun making it and when we were finished I told him that when chefs create a dish they get to name it so, I give you…

    Marcel’s French Red Soup:

    Red_soup1

    olive oil

    sea salt

    1 yellow onion

    5 cloves of garlic

2 cups of chopped cabbage (we used green, but you could use red)

    4 roma tomatoes

    10 cherry tomatoes

    10 baby carrots (leave whole)

    1 red bell pepper

1 carton of organic veggie broth

4 oz. can of tomato paste

    fresh rosemary and thyme

Get a big soup pot, pour in about 2 ounces of olive oil and saute the onion and garlic with some sea salt. Every couple of minutes add the next veggie on the list. Then add the entire carton of broth and can of tomato paste. Stir, stir, stir. Simmer for about 45 minutes. Add the rosemary and thyme in the last 15 minutes, depending on your taste. Serve with crunchy toasted french bread drizzled with olive oil. Yum!
