    Sweet daydreams!!

  • Cozy, snugly, enveloping, embracing, cloaking, swaddling… these are some of the words that come to mind when I think of this quaint 1790 whaler's cottage near Sag Harbor Village, New York (interior: Michelle R. Smith, Studio MRS). The chilly weather is a reminder to savor nourishing, small moments like a hot cup of tea, whether made with soothing, delicate blossoms or stimulating  spices. You decide!

  • There's still time to catch the exhibit The Keeper, through September 25th at the New Museum (235 Bowery, NY), curated by provocateur Massimiliano Gioni

"Densely packed with thousands of objects and images lovingly preserved by artists, collectors or hoarders…" — "It conveys the devotion of the various caretakers, questions what it means to be an artist and serves as a requiem both for artifacts being destroyed by war and for once-vital technologies that are now fading away." – 1st Dibs

Above: "Arthur Bispo do Rosário’s undated Carrinho-Arquivo II (Archive-Cart II) combines cardboard sheets, metal hooks, string, wood and wheels. A patient at a psychiatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Bispo believed he’d been called on by God to present to the deity at Judgement Day all the earthly goods he deemed worthy of salvation. He spent decades amassing objects that he combined into pieces such as this. Photo courtesy Museu Bispo do Rosário Arte Contemporânea/City Hall of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil" – 1st Dibs

In 1993, the Austrian artist Oliver Croy and the critic Oliver Elser rescued almost 400 tabletop-scale models of imaginary Swiss buildings from junk shop oblivion. They were all made from cardboard, matchboxes and magazine tear sheets, by one Peter Fritz (1916-1992), an insurance clerk from Vienna about whom nothing further is known.

  • The petite Woodsist Festival — founded by the indie record label Woodsist — has been an annual event in Big Sur for the past six years. Sadly, with the Soberanes wildfire raging nearby, the show had to be relocated at the eleventh hour.

Bravo to promoters (((folkYEAH!))) for securing an alternate location at Love Field in Point Reyes Station, the land of oysters and cheese, a bucolic town of just 350 people in Marin County. Love Field is a twist on the "If you build it they will come" story. In this version the field had previously been a baseball diamond that owner Jim Love built for his kids and the community back in the 80s. Camper Van Beethoven did a benefit concert there in 2007 using the back porch as a stage, to benefit Love Field and the local radio station KWMR. Jim Love's son Tyler is now the shepherd of the property and with a recently constructed artful stage, built by master woodcrafter Gabe Korty, Tyler got into gear with his team and everything came together beautifully under a big billowing silk parachute.

Woodsist has always felt more like a gathering of friends having a reunion rather than a festival. There are some loyalists who return every year, many planning it as their main summer vacation. Helping out with the merch I've made friends with regular attendees from all over the country — Saint Louis, Chicago, Austin, Miami, Seattle — and other countries as well — France, Italy, and Germany, to name a few.

I was able to steal shots of the bands between merch customers:

Camp time! With the change of venue this year we had the chance to bond even more as Tyler Love graciously invited the crowd to camp on site. It was dreamy. We had sheep grazing outside of our tent and woke with the rooster for three glorious California mornings in a row.

  • I'm always open to expanding my knowledge of recycled book art. I was at the local library the other day and they had a great exhibit on folded book art that drew me in instantly. A random opportunity presented itself. The artist was having a workshop at a neighboring library just down the coast in a half hour so I sprinted over there, safely mind you. The heart book is my first attempt. Not very precise, but who cares!

    IMG_6770

Here are some expert examples by others. You could fill out the entire book with one big heart like this:

Tomorrow I'm going to a workshop at the library on origami 3D sculpture. There's always something new to learn!
